This year’s symposium had the following theme: ‘Security, a life saving industry’. Security is not one of the first things that come to mind when thinking about sectors within mechanical engineering, although it nowadays is an important and widely spread sector. Security includes how technologies can be created in a more effective and more safe way. This includes safety for its users, but also includes ways of defending society. Topics that were talked about during the day were for example the safety of a network of autonomous cars and hazard analysis procedurs. The end speaker this year was Arjen Kamphuis, a well known face in the IT sector. During his lecture he talked about cyber-terrorism and he explained why we use pencils to vote instead of using voting computers.
